Winery on the Camino!
You will follow the St James’ Way and stop for a visit and tasting at an impressive Estate adjacent to the Irache’s Monastery, outside Estella. You’ll visit the viticulture garden and vineyards. In the winery building will tour the different wine production areas and trace the steps followed by the grapes during the wine making process. Afterwards you’ll continue with a tasting of three of their great wines in the winery’s social area overlooking the Estate
DESCRIPTION
One hundred and fifty years ago, the Larrainzar family acquired this extraordinary estate in Ayegui, south of Pamplona. Luis Larrainzar, the great-grandfather of the founder of the Pago de Larrainzar Winery, established a vineyard of Tempranillo grapes with limited production that was awarded a gold medal in the wine competition at the 1929 World Exhibition in Barcelona. The grape varieties cultivated include Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha, from different clones and stocks. The harvest is carried out by hand, in small boxes, selecting bunch by bunch.
First we will visit the Viticulture Garden where you’ll see different vine training and pruning techniques applied to the grape varieties. Then it’s on to the Pago de Larrainzar vineyards, starting with an excellent view from an historic overlook spot. In the winery we’ll tour the different wine production areas and explain the steps followed by the grapes in the wine making process.
Of course the visit to the estate will end with a tasting of their great wines in their social space overlooking the estate.
